CEREC crowns, also known as same-day crowns, have revolutionized the process of getting a dental crown. Unlike traditional crowns that require multiple appointments over several weeks, CEREC crowns can be designed, created, and placed in just one visit with our dentist at Town Square Dental. This is incredibly convenient for those with busy schedules or who simply want to minimize the time spent in our dental chair. It is also extremely convenient when a tooth needs emergency care!

CEREC crowns provide a fast, dependable, and visually appealing option for individuals requiring a prompt dental crown. Sharing this information is important for making informed choices during dental emergencies or injuries. If you have experienced an injury or have a tooth emergency, don't hesitate to contact us for assistance.

Why Do I Need a Crown?

When a tooth needs a crown, it is because it has become vulnerable due to weakness and cracking. This can happen because of cavities, fractures, extensive fillings, or following a root canal procedure. (Keep in mind, removing the root (pulp) during a root canal treatment can lead to brittleness in the tooth structure). Crowns play a crucial role in strengthening and stabilizing the tooth's surface to prevent complications like extractions.

Repairing a weakened tooth by placing a crown can help restore its functionality and bring it back to its original shape and size, enabling it to function effectively. Crowns are custom-made to fit over the tooth, providing an extra layer of protection. This helps to prevent further damage and ensures that you can continue to use the tooth for biting and chewing without any issues. With proper care and maintenance, a crown can last for many years, allowing you to maintain a healthy and beautiful smile.

What is a CEREC Crown?

The world of digital technology evolves rapidly, and dentistry is no exception. Here we will talk about the computer-aided designs (CAD) and the computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) of CEREC crowns and how they are created. CEREC stands for “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics” meaning it can be done in one day with the help of computer-assisted technology. CEREC crown technology has also revolutionized the way dental crowns are created, providing patients with a convenient and efficient solution for restoring their smiles. By eliminating the need for multiple appointments and temporary crowns, patients can now have their permanent crown placed in one appointment.

The process begins with the dentist using a specialized camera to capture detailed images of the tooth that requires a crown. These digital impressions are then sent to a computer, where advanced software creates a 3D model of the tooth. With this precise digital model, the CEREC machine fabricates the crown from a block of tooth-colored ceramic in a matter of minutes. Not only does the CEREC crown offer a time-saving advantage, but it also provides a more precise fit and natural look compared to traditional crowns. Patients can leave our dental practice with a restored tooth that blends seamlessly with the rest of their smile, all thanks to this innovative technology.

CEREC crowns are known for their strength and durability. They are made from high-quality ceramic materials that are as strong as they are aesthetically pleasing. These crowns can withstand the everyday wear and tear of chewing and speaking, resisting abrasion, and providing long-lasting protection for the tooth underneath.

One of the most appealing aspects of CEREC crowns is their natural appearance. The advanced technology used to create these crowns allows for precise color-matching and shaping, ensuring that the crown blends seamlessly with the rest of your natural teeth. This means you can smile and speak confidently, knowing that your crown looks just like a real tooth.

With their convenience, strength, durability, and natural look, it's no wonder why more and more people are choosing CEREC crowns for their dental needs. If you are interested in finding out if a CEREC crown is right for you, reach out to us at Town Square Dental.

CEREC Crowns VS Traditional Crowns

The difference between CEREC crowns and traditional crowns lies in the technology used to create them.  As discussed previously, CEREC Crowns are made using CAD/CAM technology, which allows for same-day crowns to be created and fitted in just one appointment. On the other hand, traditional crowns require multiple visits to us, as they are created in a dental laboratory.

CEREC Crowns have revolutionized the way dental crowns are made, providing a convenient and efficient option for patients in need of tooth restoration quickly. With CAD/CAM technology, the process of creating a crown is streamlined, eliminating the need for messy impressions and temporary crowns.

In just one visit to our practice in Rupert, Idaho and Burley, Idaho, patients can have a custom-made CEREC crown designed, milled, and fitted, saving time and reducing the overall treatment duration. This advanced technology not only offers a quicker solution but also ensures a precise fit and a natural looking result, allowing you to regain your smile with confidence.

On the other hand, traditional dental crowns involve a lengthier procedure. First, our dentist prepares the tooth and takes an impression of it. The impression is then sent to a dental laboratory to create the permanent crown. During the waiting period of 1-2 weeks, a temporary crown is placed to preserve the space. A temporary crown (or bridge) made of acrylic is fitted and secured with temporary dental cement. The temporary crown is color matched to the neighboring teeth. Given their temporary nature, it is important to handle them with care. Upon completion of the permanent crown, you would return to our dental practice to remove the temporary crown. The tooth is then cleaned, and the permanent crown is placed.

It is important to note that a dental impression of a tooth may not be as precise as a 3D scan. Digital intraoral 3D scans are 50% more accurate than dental impressions due to various factors such as the quality of impression material, distorted impressions, and the skills of the dental technician. These 3D scans are incredibly accurate, requiring minimal to no adjustments to the completed crown. However, it is important to keep in mind that CEREC crowns are typically more expensive than traditional crowns.

While both types of crowns are effective in restoring damaged teeth, the convenience and efficiency of CEREC Crowns make them a popular choice for you if you are looking to quickly restore your smile. Traditional crowns are also a great way to restore function to a damaged tooth. Knowing the pros and cons of each you can make an informed decision about what best suits you.

What Can CEREC Create?

It is important to keep in mind that CEREC is capable of creating not just crowns, but also crowns for implants, fixed bridges, inlays, onlays, veneers, dentures, and even certain orthodontic appliances. For further information, our dentists can answer any questions you may have.

Is a CEREC Crown Right for You?

When an injury or accident occurs and you need prompt treatment, CEREC crowns offer a fantastic solution to quickly return to your daily routine without the need for temporary crowns and multiple visits. They are fast, convenient, and have minimal impact on your everyday life, allowing you to resume your regular activities in no time.
